LIVE Men’s Elite Race - 2014 Cyclo-cross World Cup - Heusden-Zolder, Bel...

LIVE coverage of the 2014 Cyclo-Cross World Cup on Friday 26th December. The fifth of this year’s six events is from Heusden-Zolder in Belgium.

For more information and news on professional cycling, visit UCI or follow us on Twitter. For more cycling videos and to watch live events our YouTube Channel can be found at Youtube

The origins of cyclo-cross are a matter of much debate. One theory we like is that in the early 1900s, French cyclists would race each other from one town to the next by whichever route they thought would be the fastest. They would cut through fields and forests, carry their bike over fences and generally take any shortcut they could in order to make it to the finish first!

Today, Cyclo-cross is raced on a circuit of between 2.5km and 3.5km. The terrain is varied and may include clearings, roads, country lanes, sands and forest paths. Riders are required to complete several laps of the circuit over a period of no more than one hour. Sometimes they have to carry their bikes in order to negotiate steep paths, muddy tracks and artificial obstacles. Technical back-up is permitted.

This spectacular discipline is an unbeatable school of cycling in that it requires incredible technical skill, impressive physical fitness and plenty of courage.

Chronicles of the Green Machine - A Farewell to Ivan Basso

The name is Basso, Ivan Basso, the Smiling Assassin for his ability to inflict pain on his rivals with a grin. As a two time winner of the Giro d’Italia there’s little doubting this man’s talent on two wheels, but there’s a whole lot more to Ivan than just bike racing. Trying to contain the energy of his three young children is by no means an easy task. With such an active lifestyle it’s not hard to stay in shape but even in his latter years quality time on the bike is still of utmost importance and after the rigours of the day it’s time for a recovery drink, naturally Ivan takes it straight up shaken not stirred. And so his next mission begins from blueberries to bike racing, Grazie Ivan, ride safe and good luck in the future!

The Chronicles of the Green Machine - A Farewell to Peter Sagan

Born in Slovakia, Peter Sagan's superhero training started at a very young age, taking to sports like superman to the air, but it was one activity in particular that really captured his imagination. Cycling perfectly matched his powers of speed and agility. From Junior World Cross Country Champion, where he gave a rare glimpse at the first of many victory salutes, Peter soon realized he could go even faster on skinny tires so he rounded up his friends and prepared to rock the road with Cannondale Pro Cycling. With over 60 victories, there's no doubt Peter has emerged to be a true force to be reckoned with in the world tour, from secret training techniques to cameo appearances to honing his next victory salute. From everyone at Cannondale, thank you Peter and good luck on the road ahead.
