Tabor@Cyclo Cross World Cup 2011/12

During the second round of the Patrick UCI 2011-2012 Cyclo-cross World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic, the Belgian rider Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Revor) and Katerina Nash (Luna Pro Team) took a win and the lead in the overall standings. Pauwels successfully completed a long solo effort while Nash distanced Dutch riders Daphny van den Brand (AA Drink/ Cyling Team) and Sanne van Paassen (Brainwash Wielerploeg).

In the Men's event, the fast course in Tabor saw a large group of thirteen riders complete the first laps in the lead together. An acceleration from home rider and World Champion Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep Cycling Team) was enough to get Stybar into the front together with Pauwels and his team-mate Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Revor). The latter dropped back and performed stoppage work for Pauwels in the chase group. Little later Stybar was delayed by a flat tyre. Pauwels proved to be much faster than his other rivals and built up a lead of nearly one minute. In the final laps Stybar and Vantornout distanced the other chasers and eventually Stybar pleased the home crowd by winning the sprint, at 32s from winner Pauwels. The latter takes over the lead in the World Cup from Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) who finished fifth in Tabor. Nys and Stybar share second place in the standings at 15 points from Pauwels.

The race in the Women's category was wide open, five women dominated the opening half of the race and in the final laps the group was reduced to three leaders thanks to the efforts from Van Paassen and Nash, while Van den Brand focused on following the two protagonists. In the last lap Nash climbed better than her Dutch rivals and she stormed to her second ever win in a round of the World Cup. Van Paassen slowed in the final metres and Van den Brand captured second place at 6s from Nash. Lucie Chainel-Lefevre (France) was best of the rest at 42s. Nash is the new leader in the World Cup with a lead of 15 points on Van Paassen.

Lars van der Haar (Netherlands) excelled during the first round in the Men Under 23 category. Elia Silvestri (Italy) managed to stay with the Dutch rider but halfway into the race Van der Haar powered away. Mike Teunissen (Netherlands) was best of the rest and flanked his compatriot on the podium in Tabor.
In the Junior Men category Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands) easily helf off his older opponents in Tabor. Quentin Jauregui (France) was best of the rest at 20s, just ahead of Daan Hoeyberghs (Belgium).

Levi's Gran Fondo 2011 - GoPro Ride Video

A bike ride with Levi Leipheimer. Just how much fun is Levi's Gran Fondo? See and cycle for yourself. 7,500 cyclists set out from Santa Rosa, California on October 1, 2011 in a start that strained the edges of the streets. On all routes, riders cycled through town with law enforcement handling rolling closures and intersection monitoring, ensuring safety and swift passage for riders. Out on the course, rest stops were located approximately every 12 miles with great food and beverages, mechanical support, and toilets. In between, there was full motor support and EMTs in case of emergency or the need to abandon and catch a ride for you and your bike back into town. Once the pedaling was done, all riders and their families enjoyed an excellent meal, a frosty beer, local wine, live music, kid's events, and a huge vendor exhibition back in Santa Rosa!

Tour de France - Garmin-Cervelo wins Tour TTT by MAVIC

By winning the team time trial on stage two in the 2011 Tour de France, the Garmin-Cervelo team achieved one of their biggest goals of the year. This hard-fought win required perfect planning and preparation by both the athletes and staff. Choice in materials is also critical, and close work between the team, Cervelo, and Mavic has resulted in cutting-edge wheels which the riders used to maximum effect.

Martin wins inaugural - Tour of Beijing - Stage 5

Tony Martin secured a commanding victory in the inaugural Tour of Beijing -- the UCI's first WorldTour event in Asia -- after being the only man to wear the leaders red jersey during the five day event.

For many this conclusion may have been inevitable after the world time trial champion's domination of his specialty on day one and the 17 second lead he established then and held until today's finale. But it required the steely resolve that his HTC-Highroad teammates displayed to keep him in the red jersey from start to finish.

Martin was joined on the final Tour podium by Garmin Cervelo's David Millar, who like the winner had been in that same spot since stage one, and Chris Froome (Sky Pro Racing) in third palce in the overall general classification.

On the final day of racing, Katusha produced the perfect strategy to deliver both a final stage win and the green jersey to their number-one man Denis Galimzyanov.

Martin's victory tops and tails a stellar year for the 26-year-old German, who had begun 2011 with another win on general classification in Paris-Nice in early March.

"It's been a fantastic year and now a fantastic week for me," Martin said

"It's really nice to have a victory and makes me so proud to win the first race here.

"But we had a very strong team that was pulling the whole time and I have to thank them for the win. The whole team was magnificent."

On the subjects of his transition from time trial specialist to stage race winner and the future, Martin expressed both satisfaction with progress to date and confidence for what is to follow.

"I think for the moment I can win every time trial and when the mountains are not too hard, I can stay with the best," he said.

"I will be happy if I can make the same races next year as this year. So many dreams came true this year I really have to think about what can be better, so I will be happy if I can be in the same races again.

"But the Olympics is also a big goal."

The Tour winner has one more race in France -- Le Chrono Des Nations -- one he has every intention of trying to win, before taking a well earned break.

Victory for Viviani - Tour of Beijing - Stage4

Today's fourth stage of the Tour of Beijing twice passed by China's iconic Great Wall, inspiring the riders, it seemed, to create one of their own as they raced towards the line for a wonderful mass finish at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre.

In the end it was Liquigas-Cannondale which negotiated the best path -- steering multi-talented Italian Elia Viviani to victory ahead of team-mate Peter Sagan (Slovak Republic).

SaxoBank Sungard's JJ Haedo followed Viviani and Sagan across the line for third.

For Viviani, it was the 22-year-old track and road star's eighth race victory for the year and the launching pad, he hopes, for much more to come.

"It is very good for me. It is my only second season as a pro. I am young and I can now hope for the sprints next season in the big races," Viviani said.

"It was a very fast sprint at the end of a very long stage. The team was fantastic for me."

The result vindicated Viviani's decision to continue to train hard after the world championships in Copenhagen a fortnight ago.

But it will also create some doubts in the young rider's mind about his plans for 2012, given that he is considered his country's best chance for a track medal at the London Olympics.

"The Olympics for me should be on the track, but maybe now could also be on the road," he said.

His win would no doubt also have impressed the Giro d'Italia's new boss, Michele Acquarone, who was at the finish as a guest of UCI President Pat McQuaid.

With the peloton back together a virtually straight 5km run into the finish and a race that had already been ridden at an average speed of over 45kph it was inevitable that the finish would be a torrid affair.

But the story of the race until then had been a six man escape that had formed after just 10km and that lasted until there were just eight kilometres left to ride.

The original break comprised Tiago Machado (Radioshack), Iijo Keisse (Quickstep), Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil -- DCM) and Julien Berard (AG2R- La Mondiale) but they were joined soon after by Lampre-ISD's Damiano Cunego and Team China's Wang Meiyin, the only successful duo of the many who tried to make the cross from the main bunch.

Their exploits made life difficult for the peloton and ensured that the staged was raced at such a high speed. At one stage their lead extended out to five minutes.

They clearly made an impact, even if in the end their adventure proved fruitless. Race leader Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad) was quick to acknowledge the effect they had on the way the stage panned out.

"The group out in front was really too big and it was not so easy to control the race," Martin said.

"It took a long time to bring them back. But in the end the team was riding really strong and everything was okay."

After retaining the leader's red jersey that he has held throughout the Tour, Martin was confident about what lay ahead.

"I am really happy with the results and situation so far and to once again have the jersey.

"The chance is there to win and tomorrow is not so long," Martin said.
