2011 UCI Track WCH day2

On Wednesday evening he contributed to Australia's success in the teams event, without leaving any chance to the rivals; yesterday, Jack Bobridge repeated his performance by easily taking the individual pursuit. The world record holder -- since 2nd February in Sydney -- beat the New Zealander Jesse Sergent, who never really gave the impression of endangering the young champion from Adelaide.

At 22 years old, Bobridge took the only title that he had been missing, thus crowning off a perfect season. He has shown that he is the man to beat in the specialty, after two years of domination from the American Taylor Phinney.

The second evening of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn was a good one for Australia, which on top of Bobridge's gold medal, clocked up a bronze with Michael Hepburn -- also in the individual pursuit -- before taking another prestigious victory in the Women's team sprint with Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch. The duo, which confirmed their victories at the last two Worlds in Pruszkow and in Copenhagen, beat Great Britain in the final, while China won the race-off for bronze medal against France.

Great Britain's silver medal came after gold in the Women's team pursuit, which opened the evening's programme. Laura Trott, Wendy Houvenaghel and Danielle King didn't have much difficulty in the final again the United States. New Zealand finished third in this Olympic specialty.

Day1@2011 UCI Track WCH

After Tuesday evening's opening ceremony, during which the International Cycling Union showed its solidarity to the Japanese who are suffering after the natural disaster in their country, the 2011 UCI Track Cycling World Championships got under way with intense competition and the awarding of the first five titles.

The Byelorussians Olga Panarina and Tatsiana Sharakova were the stars of the women's events with their victories in the 500m and the points race. The large public assembled in the magnificent Omnisport velodrome in Aperldoorn had to temporarily abandon any hope of celebrating the first Dutch medals: Willy Kanis and Marianne Vos did not make the podium. The remaining podium places for the 500m went to Sandie Claire (FRA) and Miriam Welte (GER), and those in the points race to Jarmila Machacova (CZE) and Giorgia Bronzini (ITA), the 2010 World Road Champion in Geelong and already winner of this competition in 2009 in Pruszkow.

In the men's competition, four years after Kam Po Wong's triumph, Hong Kong again celebrated victory in the Worlds scratch race thanks to the exploits of Ho Ting Kwok. The young athlete launched his attack nine laps from the end and managed to resist an attempted comeback from the Italian Elia Viviani. Former World Champion Morgan Kneisky (FRA) finished third.

In the two team events on the first evening of competition, France took its revenge on Germany in the sprint, having lost out on the title a year ago in Copenhagen. Australia confirmed its supremacy in the pursuit by winning the final against Russia. Great Britain finished third in both events.
