UCI Athletes' Commission Florian Rousseau

The newly-formed UCI Athletes' Commission discussed technological issues during the second day of their meeting at the World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Aigle, Switzerland, today.
After a training session in the morning, the eleven members, representing all cycling disciplines (road, track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, BMX and para-cycling), met with the UCI President Mr Pat McQuaid, who explained how the Athletes' Commission fits into the wider cycling and Olympic families.
UCI's Equipment Consultant, Professor Jan-Anders Månson, spoke to the members about technological issues including innovations and different materials used in construction of bikes and components. The discussions continued along the theme of security and technology.
At the end of the day the Athletes' Commission met with members of the press to explain their role in tightening the link between the UCI and the athletes.
France's track cycling sprint coach Florian Rousseau said he was happy and proud to be the first President of the Commission. He said the first step would be to make all athletes aware of its existence, its missions and its role. It would then be up to the Commission to "listen, help and meet their needs."

Tabor@Cyclo Cross World Cup 2011/12

During the second round of the Patrick UCI 2011-2012 Cyclo-cross World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic, the Belgian rider Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Revor) and Katerina Nash (Luna Pro Team) took a win and the lead in the overall standings. Pauwels successfully completed a long solo effort while Nash distanced Dutch riders Daphny van den Brand (AA Drink/Leontien.nl Cyling Team) and Sanne van Paassen (Brainwash Wielerploeg).

In the Men's event, the fast course in Tabor saw a large group of thirteen riders complete the first laps in the lead together. An acceleration from home rider and World Champion Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep Cycling Team) was enough to get Stybar into the front together with Pauwels and his team-mate Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Revor). The latter dropped back and performed stoppage work for Pauwels in the chase group. Little later Stybar was delayed by a flat tyre. Pauwels proved to be much faster than his other rivals and built up a lead of nearly one minute. In the final laps Stybar and Vantornout distanced the other chasers and eventually Stybar pleased the home crowd by winning the sprint, at 32s from winner Pauwels. The latter takes over the lead in the World Cup from Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) who finished fifth in Tabor. Nys and Stybar share second place in the standings at 15 points from Pauwels.

The race in the Women's category was wide open, five women dominated the opening half of the race and in the final laps the group was reduced to three leaders thanks to the efforts from Van Paassen and Nash, while Van den Brand focused on following the two protagonists. In the last lap Nash climbed better than her Dutch rivals and she stormed to her second ever win in a round of the World Cup. Van Paassen slowed in the final metres and Van den Brand captured second place at 6s from Nash. Lucie Chainel-Lefevre (France) was best of the rest at 42s. Nash is the new leader in the World Cup with a lead of 15 points on Van Paassen.

Lars van der Haar (Netherlands) excelled during the first round in the Men Under 23 category. Elia Silvestri (Italy) managed to stay with the Dutch rider but halfway into the race Van der Haar powered away. Mike Teunissen (Netherlands) was best of the rest and flanked his compatriot on the podium in Tabor.
In the Junior Men category Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands) easily helf off his older opponents in Tabor. Quentin Jauregui (France) was best of the rest at 20s, just ahead of Daan Hoeyberghs (Belgium).

Levi's Gran Fondo 2011 - GoPro Ride Video

A bike ride with Levi Leipheimer. Just how much fun is Levi's Gran Fondo? See and cycle for yourself. 7,500 cyclists set out from Santa Rosa, California on October 1, 2011 in a start that strained the edges of the streets. On all routes, riders cycled through town with law enforcement handling rolling closures and intersection monitoring, ensuring safety and swift passage for riders. Out on the course, rest stops were located approximately every 12 miles with great food and beverages, mechanical support, and toilets. In between, there was full motor support and EMTs in case of emergency or the need to abandon and catch a ride for you and your bike back into town. Once the pedaling was done, all riders and their families enjoyed an excellent meal, a frosty beer, local wine, live music, kid's events, and a huge vendor exhibition back in Santa Rosa!

Tour de France - Garmin-Cervelo wins Tour TTT by MAVIC

By winning the team time trial on stage two in the 2011 Tour de France, the Garmin-Cervelo team achieved one of their biggest goals of the year. This hard-fought win required perfect planning and preparation by both the athletes and staff. Choice in materials is also critical, and close work between the team, Cervelo, and Mavic has resulted in cutting-edge wheels which the riders used to maximum effect.

Martin wins inaugural - Tour of Beijing - Stage 5

Tony Martin secured a commanding victory in the inaugural Tour of Beijing -- the UCI's first WorldTour event in Asia -- after being the only man to wear the leaders red jersey during the five day event.

For many this conclusion may have been inevitable after the world time trial champion's domination of his specialty on day one and the 17 second lead he established then and held until today's finale. But it required the steely resolve that his HTC-Highroad teammates displayed to keep him in the red jersey from start to finish.

Martin was joined on the final Tour podium by Garmin Cervelo's David Millar, who like the winner had been in that same spot since stage one, and Chris Froome (Sky Pro Racing) in third palce in the overall general classification.

On the final day of racing, Katusha produced the perfect strategy to deliver both a final stage win and the green jersey to their number-one man Denis Galimzyanov.

Martin's victory tops and tails a stellar year for the 26-year-old German, who had begun 2011 with another win on general classification in Paris-Nice in early March.

"It's been a fantastic year and now a fantastic week for me," Martin said

"It's really nice to have a victory and makes me so proud to win the first race here.

"But we had a very strong team that was pulling the whole time and I have to thank them for the win. The whole team was magnificent."

On the subjects of his transition from time trial specialist to stage race winner and the future, Martin expressed both satisfaction with progress to date and confidence for what is to follow.

"I think for the moment I can win every time trial and when the mountains are not too hard, I can stay with the best," he said.

"I will be happy if I can make the same races next year as this year. So many dreams came true this year I really have to think about what can be better, so I will be happy if I can be in the same races again.

"But the Olympics is also a big goal."

The Tour winner has one more race in France -- Le Chrono Des Nations -- one he has every intention of trying to win, before taking a well earned break.

Victory for Viviani - Tour of Beijing - Stage4

Today's fourth stage of the Tour of Beijing twice passed by China's iconic Great Wall, inspiring the riders, it seemed, to create one of their own as they raced towards the line for a wonderful mass finish at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre.

In the end it was Liquigas-Cannondale which negotiated the best path -- steering multi-talented Italian Elia Viviani to victory ahead of team-mate Peter Sagan (Slovak Republic).

SaxoBank Sungard's JJ Haedo followed Viviani and Sagan across the line for third.

For Viviani, it was the 22-year-old track and road star's eighth race victory for the year and the launching pad, he hopes, for much more to come.

"It is very good for me. It is my only second season as a pro. I am young and I can now hope for the sprints next season in the big races," Viviani said.

"It was a very fast sprint at the end of a very long stage. The team was fantastic for me."

The result vindicated Viviani's decision to continue to train hard after the world championships in Copenhagen a fortnight ago.

But it will also create some doubts in the young rider's mind about his plans for 2012, given that he is considered his country's best chance for a track medal at the London Olympics.

"The Olympics for me should be on the track, but maybe now could also be on the road," he said.

His win would no doubt also have impressed the Giro d'Italia's new boss, Michele Acquarone, who was at the finish as a guest of UCI President Pat McQuaid.

With the peloton back together a virtually straight 5km run into the finish and a race that had already been ridden at an average speed of over 45kph it was inevitable that the finish would be a torrid affair.

But the story of the race until then had been a six man escape that had formed after just 10km and that lasted until there were just eight kilometres left to ride.

The original break comprised Tiago Machado (Radioshack), Iijo Keisse (Quickstep), Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil -- DCM) and Julien Berard (AG2R- La Mondiale) but they were joined soon after by Lampre-ISD's Damiano Cunego and Team China's Wang Meiyin, the only successful duo of the many who tried to make the cross from the main bunch.

Their exploits made life difficult for the peloton and ensured that the staged was raced at such a high speed. At one stage their lead extended out to five minutes.

They clearly made an impact, even if in the end their adventure proved fruitless. Race leader Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad) was quick to acknowledge the effect they had on the way the stage panned out.

"The group out in front was really too big and it was not so easy to control the race," Martin said.

"It took a long time to bring them back. But in the end the team was riding really strong and everything was okay."

After retaining the leader's red jersey that he has held throughout the Tour, Martin was confident about what lay ahead.

"I am really happy with the results and situation so far and to once again have the jersey.

"The chance is there to win and tomorrow is not so long," Martin said.

Cyclocross 202 with Todd Wells - Starting the Season

2010 Cyclocross Champion Todd Wells takes you through how he starts off his cross season.

Day 2 - Road World Championships 2011 Copenhagen - Time Trial Men Jr. + Elite Women

Gold: Mads Würtz Schmidt, Denmark: "It was a very hot seat - but I made it. It is the biggest day of my life. I haven´t realised yet that I´m actually world champion - I think it will take me some days to realise. I knew I had the fastest time at every time check - I had Morten Bennekou (junior coach) in the car behind me and he told me. I wasn´t worried about the speed - actually I increased the speed through the race. It is just amazine - it is unbelievable". Silver: James Oram, New Zealand: "I always go to races with the ambitions to win. To be in the hot seat pretty much all day and still end up on the podium is amazing, I couldn´t have asked for more. I´m over the moon actually. I came to the Worlds with the expectation of being extremely happy to finish in the top five. Bronze: David Edwards, Australia: "I am really happy about my bronze medal - I was a very good nice circuit, there were parts with wind and other parts with no wind and there were many technical turns. I liked racing inside the city - the crowds were amazing". With a solid performance on the wet streets of Copenhagen, german powerhouse Judith Arndt had enough stength in her legs towards the end to resist any pressure from her rivals, as she secured the gold with a 21 second gap to New Zealand´s Linda Willumsen and last years champion Emma Poley from Great Britain. Arndt proved the stronger rider on the decisive kilometers in a wet and windy Copenhagen in a close Women Time Trial with 11 riders finishing within a minut of each other. In a very close battle for silver and bronze, former danish rider Linda Willumsen won the hearts of her former countrymen, as she succeeded in winning yet another WC medal for New Zealand 2,4 seconds ahead of Great Britain´s Emma Pooley.

2011 UCI Women's Road World Cup Highlights leg 5, 6 and 7 - Season Final

Annemiek van Vleuten (Nederland Bloeit) cemented her position at the top of the World Cup table with a stylish win at the final round in Plouay, France on Saturday. Twice winner in Plouay (2009, 2010), Emma Pooley (Garmin-Cervelo) opened with an attack which caused a break on the fourth of six laps of a 19.1 kilometre circuit. With her went World Cup leader, Annemiek van Vleuten (Nederland -Bloeit), Evelyn Stevens (HTC HighRoad), Chantal Blaak (AA Drink) and Erinne Willock (Tibco). The quartet quickly gained a gap of over one minute 40 seconds. Behind, the peloton was slowly diminished until the main chase group was just eleven riders, with the large peloton three minutes in arrears. On the fifth lap, Pooley attacked again and managed to get away, solo. She built a lead of around a minute. At the same time that she took on the leaders, Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit) accelerated fiercely from the chase group and began to bridge across the gap of over one minute to the front of the race. She needed less than ten kilometres to get to the group behind Pooley and when she did, she kept going. The group went with her, which meant that Pooley's advantage began to fall. For the closing kilometres, the Briton hung on at 15 seconds, but Vos persisted and Pooley was caught with three kilometres to go. Van Vleuten was attentive for a counterattack, which she was anticipating. Sure enough, Evelyn Stevens accelerated, but got nowhere alone, van Vleuten went with her and the pair entered the final kilometre together. Annemiek van Vleuten had the strongest legs and she managed to open a gap on the American in the finishing straight. The Dutchwoman celebrated yet another World Cup win in 2011 and became World Cup Champion for the first time with 362 points. Vos was second on 315 points and Emma Johansson (Hitec Products) third with 223 points after finishing in the peloton. Van Vleuten was naturally pleased with her win. She admitted that it had not been the plan that she would win the final round, but gave nothing away: "No, it was not the plan that I would win today, that's a secret, what our plan was, but no, not today....", she was clearly relieved that Vos had crossed the gap on the penultimate lap though, "I was thinking 'ah, I'm alone', so when she came, it was fun to be together, she did a great job today" van Vleuten smiled, "She (Vos) was strong chasing Pooley and then I was expecting an attack in the final kilometres and (Evelyn) Stevens attacked and I was on her wheel and I felt good. I was just going to enjoy the day, but I got 75 points too." Van Vleuten admitted that she had not yet thought about being World Cup Champion, "I thought about it a bit after Sweden, that it was possible, but I have been focussed this year on wins in the World Cup, so it worked out well for me and Marianne with so many wins between us this year." The day was rounded off nicely for Nederland Bloeit, the team also won the World Cup classification for teams.

Day 1 - Road Worlds Copenhagen 2011 - Time Trial Women Jr. + Men U23

Australia dominated the first day of the UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen, winning both titles in the Women Juniors and Men Under 23 time trial events.

Luke Durbridge blasted to the world title in the Men Under 23 confirming his huge talent against the clock. Last year he missed out on the world title by just over a second. This time he won by 35 seconds -- a huge margin for the 35km course.

Denmark's Rasmus Christian Quaade gave his all to try and match Durbridge, collapsing after crossing the line and needed several minutes to catch his breath. He set a time of 43:23.

Micheal Hepburn gave Australia the bronze medal by finishing third, 46 slower than his compatriot. He crashed after losing control of his bike coming out of a corner but managed to pick himself up and finish strongly. Russia's Anton Vorobev finished fourth at 49 seconds and Jasper Hamelink of the Netherlands was fifth at 1:53.

"It's hard to explain how I feel. I'm so happy that I'm struggling to put a sentence together," Durbridge said emotionally.

"We planned this out for the last six months and for it to come together is the tricky part. I had good form and knew i could do it but everything had to go right. The course suited me and it was just about grinding it out on the flat. In the last 10km, I started to enjoy it. I knew I was up and only had to stay up and bring it home."

"Congratulations to Quaade and Hepburn. It's fantastic to have two Australians on the podium."

Allen takes the first title for Australia

Early in the day,Jessica Allen won Australia's first world title in the Women Juniors time trial. She was the last rider to start and had to fight all the way to the line to win the world title. She and Elinor Barker (Great Britain) were very close at the intermediate time split but the Australian managed to find some extra speed to win by two seconds. She was stunned to be told she was World Champion but was able to celebrate on the podium after pulling on the rainbow jersey.

Barker took the silver medal, with Mieke Kroger of Germany third at three seconds.

The circuit they've chosen here is just awesome. I really liked the course," Allen said.

The course was so technical that maintaining high speed into the corners and through the corners was essential. I got a time check at halfway that I was the fastest to the turnaround point and that really lifted me."
